Essential oils are extracted through the chemical process of distillation from aromatic plant parts-root, flower, fruit, leaf and wood.  These oils not only give the plant their scent, but they are also essential for the plant’s biological processes. Because of this, many refer to the oils as the "life-force" of the plant. There are in excess of 70 essential oils in use for the purpose of aromatherapy today.

Each oil has its own characteristic aroma and profile of therapeutic effects. Some are soothing, some are invigorating, some are believed to relieve mental conditions such as depression and anxiety, some are thought to have direct physical effects on organ systems, and still others are thought to possess antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

General Precautions

Essential oils are very concentrated. Their safe use requires they be treated with care and respect. The user should be knowledgeable about their properties and actions before any use. Most personal applications require drops rather than ounces.

  • Always read and follow all label warnings and cautions
  • Keep oils tightly closed and out of the reach of children
  • Never ingest essential oils
  • Don't use undiluted oils on your skin (Dilute with vegetable oils such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil)
  • Skin test oils before using. Dilute a small amount and apply to the skin on your inner arm. Do not use if redness or irritation occurs.
  • Keep oils away from eyes and mucous membranes.
  • If redness, burning, itching or irritation occur, stop using oils immediately.
  • Avoid use of these oils during pregnancy: bitter almond, basil, clary sage, clove bud, hyssop, sweet fennel, juniper berry, marjoram, myrrh, peppermint, rose, rosemary, sage, thyme and wintergreen.
  • These oils can be especially irritating to the skin: allspice, bitter almond, basil, cinnamon leaf, cinnamon bark, clove bud, sweet fennel, fir needle, lemon, lemongrass, melissa, peppermint, tea tree and wintergreen.
  • Angelica and all citrus oils make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light. Do not go out into the sun with these oils on your skin.
  • Sweet fennel, hyssop, sage and rosemary should not be used by anyone with epilepsy.
  • People with high blood pressure should avoid hyssop, rosemary, sage and thyme.

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled using steam or water from the flowers, bark, leaves, seeds, stems, roots, or other element of a plant.  Contrary to the use of the word oil, essential oils are not an oil in the way most people think.  They come in a variety of colors and consistency, from a clear, watery texture, to a thick, syrupy and dark gold.

Essentials oils are NOT the same as fragrance oils. Where essentials oils are derived from the true plants,  perfume oils are artificially created fragrances and contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offers. Fragrance oils  should not be used in Aromatherapy.  It is unknown what chemicals are in fragrance oils.  If you see oils at incredibly low prices, it is probably a fragrance oil rather than a true quality essential oil.

Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from.  Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.
